What do young people do in Crema |
| Believe it or not, young people can do a lot of things in Crema. For instance, they can go to one of the many pubs or bars (some are Parish youth clubs), but the most popular pastime for a "Cremasco" is the "Promenade". This means that young ( but not only young) people walk up and down the main streets (via Mazzini and via xx Settembre), meeting, chatting and window shopping. This popular activity takes place at various times, according to the seasons: | ![]() |
| during the winter months it is from about 5 to
6.30 in the evening while during the summer it takes place a bit later, from 6 to 7.30.
Remember that shops are open until 7.30. It is called "fare le vasche" (doing
lengths). Very often you can find groups of friends not only in front of a bar, but also
sitting on church steps. If you stay in Crema for a while you realize that it is usually
the same group of friends that occupies the same place. As Crema is virtually empty during
the summer mounths the people who remain at home usually go to the local swimming pool or
to the Vacchelli Canal. Some people meet their friends in the centre, especially in Piazza
Duomo or at the Campo di Marte playground. It is popular to organize bike rides in the country, when the weather allows it. On Sunday afternoons some people go to the Voltini Stadium to see the local team playing football. Another pastime is going to Victoria cinema the only one in Crema, or to a disco. |

THE ORATORIO ( YOUTH CLUB) |
|
| The Oratorio is often the most important meeting place,
especially in small villages. Its name comes from the Latin word "orare", which
means " to pray". In fact it was invented by the Romans as a place for praying. The Oratorio, as it is now, was established on 8th December 1841 by Don Bosco, a young priest who lived in Turin. He created this meeting place for youth and misfits with social problems. Usually the Oratorio is in the centre of the town and near the church. In Crema all the Parishes have one, mainly attached to the church. It is open in the afternoon and in the early evening. It very often has lots of rooms where young people can enjoy themselves with videogames or playing table tennis and other games. There is also a sports ground used for soccer, tennis, volleyball and basketball. Some Parish Halls organize tournaments among Oratori. There is also a bar selling lots of kinds of sweets such as chewing gums, toffees and ice creams. It is the priest, together with some volunteers, that runs it. During the summer the so called "GREST" is organized: a group of young people from the parish look after the children who want to take part in it and organize games, trips, days at the swimming pool and holiday camps. The Oratorio, however, is not only a place where you can meet and play. The priest also organizes group discussions on young peoples problems or other topics, meetings for children and charity raffles. |
